David Squires is an Australia-based cartoonist and illustrator best known for his weekly football cartoons in The Guardian in the UK and Australia.

Born and raised in the sprawling metropolis of Swindon, David fell in love with the local football club, Swindon Town, and saw his first cartoons published in the supporters’ fanzine, ‘The 69er’. He also designed the club’s mascot, Rockin’ Robin, which is all anyone ever wants to ask him about.

Having studied to become a professional illustrator at that esteemed seat of learning, The University of Wales Institute, Cardiff, David produced artwork for When Saturday Comes, Wisden Cricket magazine and whoever else would employ him.

Once social media came along, he was able to grow a new audience for his cartoon work, culminating in the opportunity to work for The Guardian in 2014. David has since had three books published and provides regular cartoons for L’Equipe in France and 11Frenude in Germany.

You can read some ridiculously generous praise of his work here.

David is uncomfortable about referring to himself in the third person, but will make an exception for the purposes of this format.
